What is the Alliance of Community Nonprofits?

It's a network that helps independent, community-based nonprofits access the capacity larger institutions build in-house — funding leads, partnerships, volunteers, expertise, shared resources, and visibility. Mission Network NY is its New York State network.

Who can join?

Any organization serving a community in New York State: incorporated nonprofits, fiscally sponsored projects, and community groups. Emerging, volunteer-run, founder-led, and established organizations are all welcome.

Is this only for New York City organizations?

No. The Alliance is statewide: New York City, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, the Capital Region, Central New York, the Mohawk Valley, the Southern Tier, the Finger Lakes, Western New York, and the North Country.

Does the Alliance take over my organization?

No. Membership transfers nothing — not ownership, governance, board control, programs, funding, donors, intellectual property, staff control, financial control, or strategic authority.

Do I have to share my donor list?

No. Donor information is never required, never automatically shared, and never published.

Who owns my programs?

You do. Program design, curriculum, and intellectual property remain entirely yours.

No. Every collaboration is opt-in. Opportunities are offered; participation is always your choice.

Yes. Many of New York's most trusted community programs run on volunteer leadership. Size is not a criterion.

Do Founding Organizations receive funding?

No. Founding status is about voice, early access, and recognition. We don't promise financial benefits at this stage.

Over time: funding and grant leads, corporate and university partnerships, volunteers, mentors, experts, shared space and equipment, training, templates, and collective purchasing. What comes first is shaped by member needs.

Do we need to be incorporated or have 501(c)(3) status?

Not necessarily. We welcome incorporated nonprofits, fiscally sponsored projects, and community groups. Some specific opportunities from funders may have their own requirements.

Is the Alliance itself a 501(c)(3)?

The Alliance is in its founding stage. We are not making claims about incorporation or tax-exempt status; the legal structure is being developed with legal guidance and member input, and we'll publish it once settled.

How is our data protected?

Information you submit is stored securely and used to understand your organization and follow up. Private contact details, EIN (unless you choose to publish it), internal notes, donor information, and any participant or youth information are never made public.

We aggregate community insight and share it nonpartisanly. We do not endorse candidates or run partisan campaigns, and we never speak for a member without their agreement.

How much does it cost to join?

During the founding period, qualified founding organizations may receive their first year of membership at no cost. Future dues will be designed to remain affordable for community-based nonprofits. Mission Network NY also intends to develop sponsored membership opportunities so cost does not become a barrier for qualified organizations.

Will membership always be free?

Founding membership is complimentary during the initial launch period for qualifying organizations. A future dues structure may be introduced as the network develops.

What if our organization cannot afford membership?

Mission Network NY believes cost should not prevent a qualified community organization from participating. We intend to develop sponsored and access-supported membership options as partnerships and resources become available.

Why would there eventually be membership dues?

Membership dues can help support the infrastructure, technology, resources and services required to operate the network. Mission Network NY is committed to keeping community nonprofit participation accessible.

Do we have to prove our nonprofit status?

Yes. Applying organizations upload their IRS determination letter — or documentation from their fiscal sponsor — as part of the application. Uploaded documents are stored privately and are never published.
